ChatGPT Team Edition is the Small Business Solution to Complement ChatGPT Enterprise
Making it easier for small businesses to coordinate ChatGPT benefits and use
OpenAI today introduced the ChatGPT Team edition. An email to companies requesting access in advance summarized the new solution:
ChatGPT Team supercharges your team’s work with features like:
High-Speed GPT-4 for faster, more efficient outputs
Advanced Data Analysis for deeper insights from documents & datasets
Customization to foster collaboration and uplevel productivity
Our Team plan also has a dedicated workspace with admin controls, team management, and stringent security. We never train on your business data or conversations, and our models don’t learn from your usage.
The new announcement creates a clear delineation and capability maturity model across the four levels of ChatGPT use:
Free
Plus
Team
Enterprise
The first two are for individuals using the service, while Team and Enterprise recognize that organizations have specific collaboration, administration, and security needs. Enterprise is OpenAI’s premier solution in the product portfolio and does not list the price publicly. However, Syntedia learned through several sources that in 2023, the cost for ChatGPT Enterprise was $50 per user per month. Team edition is half that price if you pre-pay for the year or $30 per user per month if billed monthly.
How Team is Better Than Plus
The key differences between the Free and Plus ChatGPT versions are access to the capabilities of the GPT-4 large language model (LLM), the ability to create and share GPTs, and access to other features such as image generation, data analysis, and web search. ChatGPT Team offers fewer restrictions on hourly use limits and includes features for coordination among users and administrators.
For example, the Team tier enables users to create GPTs in a shared workspace. You could share GPTs with others as a Plus subscriber, but each user’s activity would be siloed, and there is no way to restrict access without making it a fully private GPT. Team creates a new GPT category between the public (through the marketplace) and private options.
GPTs are customizations of ChatGPT that organizations can curate to meet specific task or functional role needs. Examples include a document summarization tool, blog writing assistant, code review assistant, and market research assistant. The idea is that small businesses might have a collection of domain-specific GPTs aligned to their business needs, brand, or nomenclature that complement the core ChatGPT capability.
In addition, Teams offers several business administration features. These include unified billing and member management, role-based administration, SOC2 Type 1 compliance, and unified billing. Team subscribers’ data is also automatically opted out from use in training future OpenAI models. ChatGPT Plus subscribers can request to opt-out of model training.
How Team Differs from Enterprise
There are several significant differences between ChatGPT Team and Enterprise. These include unlimited GPT-4 and advanced data analysis use (i.e., no hourly use limits) and access to the 128K GPT-4 Turbo context window. Plus and Team subscribers can only use the 32K context window model. This may be important for use cases and organizations that frequently deal with long documents or engage in protracted interactions for requests, such as for market research.
The differences in terms of administration features are more extensive. Enterprise-tier users can access single sign-on capabilities, an analytics dashboard, domain verification for users, role-based access to GPTs, and priority support. Enterprise users also receive API credits that allow them to experiment with customized solutions.
If your small business is a heavy user of Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, you might adopt their Copilot or Duet AI solutions. However, if you are not or want to have a more general tool that can work outside your productivity applications, ChatGPT Team may be a good option. It is priced similarly to Copilot and Duet AI, Wand.ai, and other generative AI applications for knowledge assistant tasks.
Synthedia’s Outlook
Synthedia expects ChatGPT Team will be popular with small businesses as they look to connect workers together that are already using ChatGPT Plus. The benefits of collaboration and administration features will make it worth another $5 per month, even if they don’t become significant users of GPTs. However, over time, we expect many software providers that serve mid-sized and small businesses to create GPTs that connect ChatGPT users with data and workflow features in their applications. This will further enhance ChatGPT Team’s allure.
Thank you for the timely post! I’m well excited by the implications of ChatGPT Teams for SMEs. ChatGPT Enterprise is extremely pricey and its minimum seat requirements has placed it out of reach for most SMEs. OpenAI is moving so quickly with its product innovations. I wonder what comes next!
