Perplexity AI CEO Interview and Demo - Taking on Google and Microsoft in Generative AI Search
Demonstrating the next generation answer engine
Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, joined me for Synthedia 3 - the generative AI innovation showcase, to show off some new features and discuss what it takes to compete with Google and Microsoft. He began with a Perplexity demo, which I think you will find interesting. There are several features you won’t find in other products.
Perplexity is the leading alternative to the search giants right now. It has a free version but also recently introduced a $20 per month pro version that includes access to GPT-4. More importantly, it has a real-time internet connection, low latency, and provides better results than Bing Chat, ChatGPT, and Google SGE.
Aravind talked with me about the core search product, features beyond search, user personas, source citations, and how the engineering team worked to reduce hallucinations. He also answered several audience questions, including one about how Perplexity differs from each of the leading generative AI search engines.
The Battle for Generative AI Search Users
I think you will find this video well worth a watch. Aravind lays out the key challenges and opportunities and where Google’s weaknesses create an avenue for new competition. This is one of the five most important use cases already impacted by generative AI. It was good to get an inside look at what is really happening.
Let me know what you think in the comments.

ChatGPT Rolls out New Personalization Feature with Custom Instructions
ChatGPT Plus just got a useful upgrade. Subscribers can now add information about their user preferences and persona, which ChatGPT will use in formulating responses. The new custom instructions feature does not change what you can do with ChatGPT. It simply saves you from repeating your preferences every time you enter a prompt. According to OpenAI’s
This One Factor Could Kill Bing Chat. Google SGE and Perplexity AI are in a Different League.
Google dominated its early search rivals by delivering higher-quality search results more frequently. However, it was also maniacally focused on speed. That spartan Google search splash page was a sharp contrast to the cluttered portal concept of Yahoo, AltaVista, and the other search giants of the day (and even some of what you see from Bing today).
