Meta's potential for user adoption is unparalleled, but it will also lead to ballooning inference costs. At the same time, Meta is giving away Llama 3 for free choosing not to charge for usage through API access. What is Meta's endgame here? Where is the money going to be made and when will they start capitalizing?

The endgame is maintaining attention. The in-house development means long-run lower costs for the company, similar to how it previously began making its own servers. It also will enable the company to create more personalized and custom experiences.

The open-source gambit is two-fold. It's good PR for a company that is still rebuilding its reputation. It's also a way to keep Meta's tech giant rivals in check. If there is an open-source equivalent to OpenAI GPT (i.e., Microsoft) and Google Gemini, the companies are less likely to create a complete stranglehold on the market. Beyond this, Meta may actually wind up with a developer base that extends the platform faster and further than the social media giant might do on its own.

Thank you for your reply. I came to a similar conclusion. I think Meta has a real chance hurting the model providers who’s core busines relies on selling inference. They’re basically saying their product isn’t a product by giving Llama away for free.
