I suspect a really big issue. (Twitter rumors are that he secretly asked OpenAI to support Israel (he’s Jewish) or he stole IP). I have a hard time of think of something else that merits this public hanging (fraud, etc. can all be hidden in “spend time with family” and a succession plan)
Yes. I'm not sure how this helps the remaining management team. The dismissal with prejudice that included a "thank you for all you've done." That makes me think they know that there are points that might boil down to a difference of opinion. In addition, Greg's immediate departure upon hearing the news, reinforces that sentiment.
I've added a lot to this piece since publishing last night. It's up to 2,600 words and began at less than 1,300. The general tenor on social media is siding with Sam and Greg. I presume OpenAI's remaining management is working with PR over the weekend to begin a counter-narrative. I suspect by Sunday or Monday latest, we will begin to hear rumors about conflicts of interest and secretive deals. Some of that is reference briefly in a Bloomberg piece, but I'm sure the company's board members won't want to live with the current narrative. It will probably get uglier before it gets better.
With that said, the best course of action may be for OpenAI to say nothing more on the matter. It's a holiday week in the U.S. coming up. If they keep it quiet, people may lose interest. They just have to know, every move they make going forward will be under a microscope. Murati has a tough task ahead of her but she may turn out to be a star.
